PARTNER: Woodberry Forest School
CONTRACTOR: Martin & Horn
ARCHITECT: Bartzen & Ball
DATE OF INSTALLATION: Summer, 2012

SUMMARY:
In partnership with Bartzen & Ball and the Woodberry Forest Science Department Faculty, DES assisted in the design and fit-out of labs, lecture hall, study lounges, and common spaces for the new Manning Science Building, a 38,000 square foot facility designed to replace the aging Gray Math & Science Building. Spaces included labs and prep spaces for the Biology, Chemistry and Physics programs, along with associated office, general classroom, storage, study lounges, and commons spaces. DES worked closely with the architects and faculty members, paying particular attention to the special needs of a number of components in the facility including A/V components integrated into the teacher demonstration benches, custom mobile physics lab benches with built in variable voltage and lab apparatus bars, custom sized microscope cases in the biology labs and full view fume hoods in the unique student staffed prep rooms.

The furniture design complemented the rich wood tones found in the facility. The lab, commons, conference room, and lecture hall furnishings created a warm and inviting atmosphere that ties into the rest of the interior aesthetics including architectural details of science murals and a transplanted oak tree ring from the existing site. DES was able to work with the owner to create a custom solution for the lab casework, science equipment, and loose furnishings for the Manning Science Building.
