SUMMARY:
Jefferson Houston School is a 130,000 square foot new building that houses Pre-K through 8th grades in Alexandria City, VA. The contemporary learning facility houses up to 800 Pre-K through 8th grade students. The building encompasses a contextual and detailed design by the joint architecture team, incorporating the historic Art Deco design aesthetics of the surrounding buildings into this new construction in a modern way.

DES worked closely with the project management team, ACPS facilities liaison, and architects to identify and design the school’s interior furnishings (fixed and loose) for the entire building. Furnishing plans were created to support and highlight both the unique architectural design of the building, as well as the school’s programming needs. Our instructional team also worked with the district personnel to include multiple pieces of specialty equipment to support the Engineering/Production spaces.

The unique ELAs (Extended Learning Areas) provide open spaces for each wing of the building with a mix of fixed countertops, stools, tables and chairs as a way of providing dining areas for the corresponding grade levels as well as breakout academic collaboration areas that can be used for small groups throughout the day. White oak wood millwork details in the ELAs, media center, benches, and wall panels in corridors highlight the interior architecture of the building while providing functional spaces for students to use on a daily basis. The project was installed during summer 2014 for students and staff to begin using for the 2014-2015 school year.

The new building includes DES casework, millwork, and furnishings in general classrooms, science labs, resource and collaboration rooms, administrative offices, Media Center, ELAs (Extended Learning Areas), Music Rooms, Black Box Theater, and conference rooms.
